How To Set Up Google Analytics

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) helps you understand your website traffic and user behavior. Follow these steps to set up GA4 on your website.

Step 1: Create a Google Analytics Account

Go to the Google Analytics website and click "Get started" or "Start for free". Sign in with your Google account or create a new one. Click "Start measuring" to begin your setup.

Step 2: Create a Property

In the Admin section (bottom-left corner), click "Create Property". Enter your property name, select your country, reporting time zone, and currency. Click "Next", answer the business questions, and select "Get baseline reports" for your objectives. Click "Create".

Step 3: Set Up a Web Data Stream

Go to Admin → Data Streams, then click "Web" for websites. Enter your website URL and stream name. Enable "Enhanced Measurement" to automatically collect page views and other events. Click "Create Stream".

Step 4: Get Your Measurement ID

Once your data stream is created, you'll see a page with your Measurement ID (looks like G-XXXXXXX). This unique code links your website to Google Analytics.

Step 5: Install the Tracking Code

There are three main methods to install GA4:

Option A: Using Google Tag Manager (Recommended)

Create a new "Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration" tag in Tag Manager, paste your Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXX), and set trigger to "All Pages".

Option B: Manual Installation

Under Google tag, click "View tag instructions", then "Install manually". Copy the JavaScript snippet and paste it immediately after the <head> tag on each page of your website.

Option C: Using a Plugin (WordPress)

For WordPress, use a plugin like MonsterInsights. Install the plugin and follow its setup guide to connect to your GA4 account. The plugin will handle placing the GA4 code on your website.

Step 6: Verify Your Installation

Check if data is appearing in Realtime reports or DebugView. If not, verify that your GTM container is published (click "Submit" then "Publish" in GTM), or that your tracking code is properly installed on all pages.

Post-Setup Recommendations

After installation, exclude internal traffic from your reports and increase data retention to 14 months. This ensures your data is clean and useful for long-term analysis.
